Being Involved as a Student-Athlete

#1 - Pressure | #2 Networking & Fans | #3 Peers | #4 Better Than We Found It

Everytime I stepped on the field, I knew that it was a BLESSING to play for @AuburnSoftball.

It wasn't a right.

I knew that I owed something to my team.

I knew I owed something to the great fans at Jane B. Moore.

I knew I owed something to myself. Most people would view this as a negative.

"This is putting pressure on yourself"

The thing is they are right. I was and I still put pressure on myself every day.

I owe it to everyone that has helped me to be the best I can be. I wanted to honor the sacrifices that everyone has made for me.

I wanted to be as great as I could be. This forced me to hold myself to a standard.

My parents had a lot of late nights and they still went to work the next day.

Find a map like this at your school. Walk around the day before (with the map) and find your classes!

This also increases your network of people you know after athletics is over. Sure your team may be big (20+ for softball), but there are usually over 300+ Athletes at any given university.

Get to know as many as possible. Building relationships matter.

Spend time with fans, especially younger kids. Everyone knows that little kids look up to athletes, so make sure that you leave a great mark on them.

It is rewarding to see the look in a kids eye when you spend 5 minutes of your day talking to them. #3:

They will be fans for life.

I promise you aren't "that busy".

Cut out Netflix if you have to.

Spend time with people that aren't athletes. Yes, I said it. The kids in your chemistry 101 class are humans just like you. Go study with them. Go out to eat. Be engaged in their conversations.

At @AuburnU, these people will go on to run companies (Tim Cook @Apple). #4:

This will benefit you by working on your interpersonal skills (everyone isn't an athlete) and by strengthing your network.

But once again, this isn't why you do it. You do it because it is the right thing to do. #5:

My final way to be involved is the hardest, but also the simplest.

Be a great example of what people want the student athletes at your university to be.

That's it.

That's the tweet.

But seriously, you have the opportunity to do something that people would LOVE to do.

Don't waste it by doing things that don't matter.

Leave a positive mark.

Leave your school and program better than you found it! I hope this was helpful. As always, if you ever need help, please feel free to DM me.

How to be involved in your community as a Student Athlete and why it is important:

In my opinion, the best way to become involved in your community is by giving back through volunteering. Yes, it is difficult to find time, but there is nothing more rewarding than helping others.

Helping people can teach an athlete to become a servant leader. This isn't the sole reason to do it, but it will humble you.

The reason to do it is because it is the right thing to do.

In the athletic realm, there is no better place to be involved in than @AuburnSAAC. If anyone ever asks your to join a SAAC group, DO IT.

You will meet so many incredible people in your athlete department.

@DerrickBrownAU5 knows this one!

Sports, in general, are highly competitive environments. Athletes, by nature of the competition, will put "pressure" on themselves naturally. They want to succeed, like any normal, breathing human.

The stress and pressure that athletes feel is normal. Anyone that tells you it isn't probably hasn't played at an elite level. With that being said, adding to the pressure can mentally fatigue a kid who should be PLAYING.

This, in my opinion, is why we have such a high rate of burnout nowadays. Parents are more worried about college than whether or not their kids are having fun. Kids are hating their sport because they keep competing for a spot younger and younger.

It becomes part of how they view themselves. Good game, I am awesome. Bad Game, I am terrible. This isn't what kids deserve.

I was blessed growing up. My parents had one challenge for me. The question I was asked every game was "did you have fun today?" If the answer was no, then I was asked why. If we lost and I was down that was okay, but if it wasn't okay if I didn't enjoy playing.

I was allowed to compete without having to please my parents based on performance.

I challenge you to do the same.

I challenge you to free your kid from having to perform for you.

I was allowed to play to win.

When it becomes more than natural competition, it is out of hand. I will let you in on a secret, if your kid is competing for you, they don't love the sport. They love you. Don't abuse that.

"Well Victoria, I think you are talking to me. How do I change it?"

You change it by speaking powerful statements over them.

"I loved watching you play today"

"You worked hard today."

Evaluate the Process. They will love the game. They will love to compete and win, IN FRONT OF YOU! I was blessed with awesome parents who let me do that. I am forever thankful for the miles my parent put on the Ford Cadillac to come to watch me play.
